Frequently Asked Questions

What do the numbers in the MX priority column mean?

Last Updated: June 21, 2007 3:00 PM

These numbers describe the priority in which the email servers are contacted in when trying to deliver an email message.

The MX priority number is very important. It determines which mail server your email will go to initially.

Email always goes to the mail server with the lowest number. Then, if that mail server cannot be reached, it will go to the mail server with the second lowest number. The MX priority number gives you the ability to control which mail server your email will try to reach first. Once it successfully reaches a mail server, the message is sent and additional mail servers will not be tried.
