What Is Pay-Per-Click Advertising?

Last Updated: July 18, 2007 11:18 AM

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising is a very common type of paid search-engine inclusion. In pay-per-click advertising, the advertiser — i.e. Web site owner — bids on his/her Web site's ranking in the "Sponsored Listings" (or equivalent) section of a search engine's search results for a given keyword or phrase. The advertiser is then billed every time a user clicks on the link to his/her Web site.

Major PPC providers rely on a combination of users' maximum bids and contextual relevance of the advertisers' ads and Web sites when ranking the content.

Search engines generally display paid listings separate from the organic search results.
