Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird to use a Secure Connection (SSL) for Outgoing Messages

Last Updated: August 14, 2007 2:11 PM

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) are cryptographic protocols that provide secure communications on the Internet for such things as web browsing, email, Internet faxing, instant messaging and other data transfers. You can configure your email client to use SSL for outgoing mail as an extra layer of security. For more information on SSL see What is an SSL certificate?

Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird to Use SSL for Outgoing Messages

  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  2. In the left pane of the Account Settings window, click Outgoing Server (SMTP), and then click Edit.
  3. In the Use secure connection area, click SSL.
  4. Select User name and password, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK in the Account Settings window.

NOTE: The first time you send an email with your new settings you will be prompted for your email password. This is normal behavior.

You can now send messages from Mozilla Thunderbird using a secure connection.
