Configuring Microsoft Outlook Express to use a Secure Connection (SSL) for Outgoing Messages

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) are cryptographic protocols that provide secure communications on the Internet for such things as Web browsing, email, Internet faxing, instant messaging and other data transfers. You can configure your email client to use SSL for outgoing mail as an extra layer of security. For more information on SSL see What is an SSL certificate?

Configuring Microsoft Outlook Express 6 to Use SSL for Outgoing Messages

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. Select your email account, and then click Properties.
  3. Go to the Servers tab and, in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, type smtpout.secureserver.net, and then select My server requires authentication.
  4. Click Settings.
  5. Select Log on using, enter your email address and password in the Account name and Password fields, and then click OK.
  6. Go to the Advanced tab and change Outgoing mail (SMTP) to 465, and then select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

You can now send messages from Outlook Express using a secure connection.
